Full Description
This rare Victorian walnut candle and wine stand is a particularly unusual example of late 19th century occasional furniture. Constructed in walnut and dating from around 1870, the stand combines strong decorative qualities with practical functionality.
The circular top is centred by an elegant brass candle sconce with a wide drip tray, supported by a turned walnut knop. Beneath, a beautifully executed barley twist column rises from a carved foliate collar and substantial circular platform base. The quality of the carving and turning is immediately apparent, with the rich walnut timber displaying excellent colour and depth throughout.
Unlike conventional Victorian wine tables or candle stands, this example appears to have been conceived as a multi-purpose form. The elevated candle holder would have provided useful illumination while leaving the tabletop free for a glass, book or other personal items. Its proportions make it equally suited to a library, drawing room or fireside setting.
The shallow sunken base adds visual weight and stability, while the carved details and bold turning reflect the enduring popularity of Jacobean Revival influences during the Victorian period.
Examples of this type are encountered far less frequently than standard Victorian occasional tables, making it an attractive choice for collectors and interiors seeking something distinctive and difficult to replace.
