Description

This late nineteenth century folding campaign chair is a fine example of practical Victorian travel furniture. Designed to collapse flat for transport, the chair reflects the ingenuity and portability required during the era when British officers, travellers and colonial administrators carried elements of home comfort across the world.

The frame is constructed from stained beech, chosen for its strength and resilience, while the seat and back are formed from thick tan leather panels secured with traditional brass close-nailing. Over time the leather has developed a rich patina with subtle tonal variation, giving the chair the warm character that only age and use can produce.

A distinctive feature of the design is the pierced cast iron arm supports which reinforce the arms while adding a decorative industrial element typical of late Victorian craftsmanship. The chair incorporates a multi-position reclining mechanism allowing the back to be adjusted through several settings, with heavy rounded flat-head screws and cast locating pins ensuring the chair locks securely when open.

When folded the chair collapses neatly to a slim profile, allowing it to be packed for travel in the manner of traditional campaign furniture. Pieces such as this were designed for portability yet built with durability in mind, allowing them to accompany their owners on journeys by rail, ship and carriage during the great age of Victorian exploration.

Today the chair works equally well as a characterful reading chair, library seat or statement occasional piece within a traditional or eclectic interior.
