The Carved Ebony Female Bust by Roland Ogiamien (c. 1980) is a superb rare example of African art, meticulously crafted from rare ebony that ranges from jet black to deep brown with subtle light streaks. The fine detail of the face and headdress is accentuated by the natural grain of the wood, inspired by the Yoruba fila or “chief’s cap,” often elongated in carvings to signify status, leadership, and femininity.
This remarkable sculpture is signed and dated “R.U. Ogiamien 1980” on the underside, confirming its provenance. Roland Ogiamien, born in 1945, is known for sourcing his prized ebony from Ondo State in southwestern Nigeria, where the timber has become increasingly rare.
