Full Description

Three geometric medallions establish the structure of this Persian wool rug. Two larger medallions flank a smaller central example, their stepped outlines held within an elongated, serrated field. Small rosettes, angular leaves and flowering forms fill the surrounding spaces, introducing variation within the ordered composition.

A deep indigo-blue ground anchors the design. Red appears throughout the medallions, motifs and borders, while ivory outlines give definition to the more intricate drawing. Blue-green corner spandrels lighten the composition, with smaller yellow and pale blue details woven through the field. The broad palmette border provides a strong frame, enclosed by narrow floral guard bands.

Areas of low pile reveal the woven texture, giving the surface variation that becomes more apparent in changing light. From across a room, the central arrangement remains clear; closer inspection reveals differences in the drawing and spacing of individual motifs.

Attributed to Qashqai weaving, the rug belongs to the textile tradition of Fars, the province surrounding Shiraz in southwest Iran. Historically, many Qashqai families moved seasonally with their flocks between winter grazing grounds and upland summer pastures. Women spun, dyed and wove wool, making rugs and household textiles on portable looms.

Weaving knowledge passed between generations through observation and practice. Familiar medallions and floral arrangements provided a framework for individual interpretation, with variations in colour, scale and drawing giving each rug its character. Qashqai rugs are particularly associated with soft wool, expressive colour and geometric designs incorporating stylised plant and animal forms.
