North-West Persian Ivory Ground Runner, c.1940–1960

A beautifully balanced North-West Persian runner, woven across a warm ivory ground with fourteen hooked lozenge medallions that unfold in a gentle visual rhythm along its length. Each medallion is subtly varied in colour and internal drawing, while soft terracotta reds, muted blues, celadon greens, ochres and carefully placed touches of deep indigo create an unusually calm and harmonious composition. Rather than repeating mechanically, the slight variations reveal the individual judgement of the village weaver, giving the runner a quiet sense of movement and authenticity.

Unlike workshop rugs woven from rigid cartoons, this runner displays the subtle individuality that characterises traditional village weaving, where rhythm and balance take precedence over exact repetition. The result is a long, elegant runner that feels composed, considered and quietly distinctive.

Description

A beautifully balanced North-West Persian Ivory Ground Runner, c.1940–1960, distinguished by its warm ivory field and a procession of fourteen hooked lozenge medallions extending across its full length. Rather than relying on a single dominant medallion, the composition unfolds in a gentle visual rhythm, allowing a carefully judged palette of terracotta reds, muted blues, celadon greens, ochres and carefully placed touches of deep indigo to work together in quiet harmony. The generous ivory ground allows each motif to breathe, giving the runner an openness rarely found in more densely decorated examples.

The design belongs to the long-established village weaving traditions of north-west Persia, where rugs were often woven from memory rather than formal workshop cartoons. Although the overall composition follows a recognisable structure, each hooked lozenge has been interpreted with slight variations in colour, proportion and internal ornament. These subtle differences are not imperfections but evidence of the weaver's own judgement, creating a measured rhythm that guides the eye naturally along the runner while avoiding mechanical repetition.

The hooked lozenge is among the oldest geometric motifs found throughout Persian and Caucasian weaving traditions. While modern interpretations should remain cautious, these forms have long been associated with ideas of protection, continuity and order, becoming part of a visual language passed from one generation of weavers to the next. Here, they are arranged with quiet confidence across the luminous ivory field, creating a composition that feels both balanced and enduring.

Surrounding the field, a series of geometric guard borders lead to a broader principal border, forming a strong architectural frame that enhances the runner's elegant proportions. The restrained border design complements rather than competes with the central field, reinforcing the sense of balance while allowing the composition to breathe.

Hand-knotted in wool, the runner displays the durability expected of traditional North-West Persian village weaving. The surviving original flat-woven kilim ends, together with its naturally softened palette and even wear, further reinforce its authenticity and character.

Equally suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors, this runner offers warmth, texture and understated colour without overwhelming a space. Its generous length makes it ideal for entrance halls, corridors, stair landings or alongside a kitchen island, where its harmonious palette and rhythmic composition can be appreciated in full.

FAQ

Is this runner hand-knotted?

Yes. It is traditionally hand-knotted using wool, displaying the subtle irregularities and individuality associated with authentic village weaving.

Why does each medallion look slightly different?

Unlike workshop rugs produced from formal cartoons, village weavers often worked from memory, introducing small variations in colour and drawing that give each rug its unique character.

Will the colours suit modern interiors?

Yes. The muted ivory ground and softened palette of terracotta, blues and greens create a calm, balanced appearance that integrates easily into both traditional and contemporary homes.

Why This Object Stands Apart

What distinguishes this runner is not complexity for its own sake, but exceptional compositional restraint. Fourteen individually drawn hooked lozenge medallions unfold across an unusually luminous ivory ground, each subtly varied in colour and detail. Rather than relying on bold contrasts, the weaver has created movement through measured changes in tone and proportion, producing a runner with remarkable rhythm, balance and quiet sophistication.
