The exquisite carving immediately commands attention, particularly the deeply modelled flowers and foliage concentrated around the lower terminals. Few comparable labelled examples by Westley appear on the market, making the survival of this substantial mirror in such complete and characterful condition especially noteworthy.

Full Description

This imposing mid-19th century giltwood pier and overmantel mirror combines strong architectural proportion with remarkably expressive carved decoration. Dating to around 1860, the mirror is associated with the Birmingham cabinet maker, upholsterer and furnisher John Westley of 6 New Street, whose surviving paper trade label remains attached to the original timber backing.

The tall frame rises through two substantial uprights into a softly rounded arch, its architectural section formed around a broad convex cushion-moulded outer profile. Set within this is a finely carved classical guilloche-derived border, formed from repeating elongated oval reserves linked at narrow pinched junctions. The ornament follows the uprights and sweeps continuously around the arched crest, creating a measured decorative rhythm while allowing the scale and naturally aged surface of the original mirror plate to remain dominant.

It is at the lower corners that the carving becomes particularly compelling. The otherwise controlled frame suddenly develops into deeply modelled arrangements of overlapping leaves, flower heads and scrolling foliate forms. These terminate in substantial projecting bases, giving the mirror an almost architectural footing.

The carving has considerable depth and movement, with individual leaves and petals standing proud of the frame so that the decoration changes noticeably with light and viewpoint.

This concentration of ornament is beautifully judged. Rather than covering the entire carved  giltwood frame with carving, the maker allowed the decorative weight to build towards its base, leaving the elegant arched outline to dominate above.

The original arched mirror plate is believed to retain its historic mercury-backed surface, displaying the characteristic clouding, dark spotting, localised losses and softened reflection associated with early mirror glass. Viewed in person, the plate has the wonderfully uneven, atmospheric quality that modern replacement glass cannot reproduce. Its survival within the original frame and historic backing is an important part of the mirror's authenticity and character.

The reverse reveals traditional workshop construction, with numerous individual timber boards held within a substantial frame and strengthened by vertical and horizontal braces. This largely untouched back also retains Westley's fragmentary printed trade label.

Comparison with another surviving labelled Westley object allows the missing portion of the label to be understood with considerable confidence. A complete example reads “FROM JOHN WESTLEY, CABINET MAKER, Upholsterer & Carpet Factor, 6, New Street, Birmingham.” The surviving wording, typography, layout and distinctive border correspond closely with the label on this mirror.

Westley is also documented through other surviving Victorian furniture, including an oak and pollard oak three-tier buffet sold by Christie's in 2004, which carried labels giving the same 6 New Street address. The wording “FROM JOHN WESTLEY” is particularly interesting, suggesting a substantial Victorian furnishing establishment through which furniture and decorative furnishings could be made, commissioned or supplied.

At 154 cm high and 91.5cm wide, the proportions allow the mirror to function convincingly in either of its historically appropriate settings. Its vertical form works naturally as a pier mirror, while the projecting lower terminals and commanding height make it equally successful positioned centrally above a substantial mantel as an overmantel mirror.

Condition

Presented in genuine antique condition with age-related wear throughout. The gilt surface displays rubbing, small losses and tonal variation consistent with its age, together with areas of historic cracking and movement to the timber, gesso and gilt surface, particularly around some of the moulded and carved sections. These are consistent with the construction and considerable age of the mirror and are clearly visible in the photographs.

The original mirror plate displays extensive atmospheric ageing, including clouding, dark spotting, scratches, small areas of reflective loss and tonal variation consistent with considerable age. These characteristics are retained as an important part of the mirror's historic surface and appearance.

The reverse retains considerable age and surface history, together with the partially surviving John Westley paper trade label. The label is intentionally preserved in its existing state.
