This Late Victorian English Buff Terracotta Crown Chimney Pot c.1880 is an unusually architectural example of the decorative chimney pots produced during the second half of the 19th century.

Its construction is particularly noteworthy. A broad square base with shaped, chamfered corners rises into a cylindrical shaft, the transition emphasised by a substantial rounded moulding. A further ring defines the upper shaft before the chimney pot reaches its more elaborate ventilated section.

Here, rectangular ventilation gaps are divided by projecting vertical elements and distinctive moulded, corbel-like ornaments. Above them, the upper body expands through a sequence of pronounced horizontal mouldings, including two substantial rounded rings separated by a broad recessed band. The arrangement creates a strongly modelled profile when viewed from any direction.

The chimney terminates in its most recognisable feature: a large pointed terracotta crown. Alternating triangular projections surround the opening, while the view from above reveals the separate central circular flue within. The spaces between the inner flue and outer crown form part of the original ventilation arrangement rather than being purely decorative.

The buff-fired clay has developed a particularly attractive exterior surface. Pale ochre and muted terracotta tones are overlaid with grey weathering, darker spotting and remnants of green algae, especially around the projecting ornaments and protected areas beneath the mouldings. Rather than disguising its former outdoor life, the surface records it.

At 72 cm high and exceptionally heavy, this is a substantial example. The surface retains extensive natural variation, including mottled buff, ochre and grey colouring together with remnants of green algae and weather-related patination. These are particularly evident around the sheltered corbel-like projections and mouldings.
