Description

This Late Georgian Anglo-Chinese Padauk Chest of Drawers reflects the quality and refinement associated with the finest export furniture produced for the British market during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Rather than relying upon elaborate decoration, its appeal comes from exceptional timber selection, precise construction and balanced proportion.

Constructed in dense Asian padauk, the chest retains the distinctive ribbon figure, rich reddish-brown colour and natural depth that make this hardwood so highly regarded. Examination of the cabinet revealed the characteristic weight, ribbon grain, subtle aromatic scent and reddish dust commonly associated with aged padauk, all supporting the timber's identification.

The façade is defined by a substantial 20mm mitred architectural face frame, an unusually refined detail that creates a continuous surround to the drawer arrangement. Five solid single-board drawer fronts allow the beautifully figured timber to remain the dominant visual feature, while finely applied cock beading protects the drawer edges and creates crisp shadow lines across the front.

The hand-cut dovetailed drawer boxes remain impressively well fitted, demonstrating the accuracy of the original cabinetmaker. Internally, the chest retains its open framed drawer support system, while the rear is traditionally built with a framed panel back incorporating floating panels, reflecting the same attention to craftsmanship throughout the cabinet.

Original solid brass side carrying handles reinforce its Anglo-Chinese export origins. The existing beaded brass ring pull handles are sympathetic historic replacements that sit comfortably with the cabinet and allow the remarkable timber to remain the focus.

Raised on a shaped arched plinth with delicate scroll returns, this is a chest whose quality becomes more apparent with closer inspection. Every constructional decision, from the mitred frame to the carefully selected padauk, reflects a cabinetmaker who valued precision, proportion and enduring craftsmanship.

The padauk retains a deep, well-developed patina with minor surface marks, small knocks and age-related wear consistent with more than two centuries of careful use. One original lock is absent and no keys are present. The brass ring pull handles are historic replacements that have aged sympathetically with the cabinet. Drawer boxes remain tight with well-preserved hand-cut dovetails, and the chest displays excellent structural integrity throughout.
