This rare James Shoolbred & Co pine linen storage cupboard (linen press) dates from c. 1870–1900, made in Tottenham Court Road, London. Crafted in soft pine, it features elegant raised pilaster‑panel doors, a stepped cornice trim, and a substantial plinth base that adds architectural presence. The original James Shoolbred label on the reverse confirms its authenticity, while remnants of old paint add patinated charm.
This linen cupboard still retains its original white-painted back, has a dry-scraped top and the inside of the door is finished in a Victorian-era cream buff colour—a classic tone used in utilitarian interiors of the time. These painted surfaces are a tangible reminder of its age and provenance, reinforcing its authenticity as an original Victorian piece.
Typical of Shoolbred’s late-Victorian whites, this practical yet refined cupboard would once have served for linen or household storage. Although it has been stripped back over the years, traces of earlier finishes still remain on the top and sides, offering layered visual history and character.
James Shoolbred & Co played a pioneering role in British furniture making from the 1870s, blending Regency-style elegance with functional Victorian design. Today, pieces that retain original labels and period detailing are increasingly rare and highly sought after—making this a collectible with both decorative and historical value.

Condition: As you can imagine, our products have had a life before we got them, been used and cherished by many others before we received them. Therefore, you will see signs of ageing, natural wear, fading & marks, remnants of paint, dry-scraped top which creates its unique look.
