DESCRIPTION
This iconic Herbert Terry & Sons Anglepoise Lamp is the Model 1209 – produced between 1933 and 1968 – and widely regarded as one of the most important British lighting designs of the 20th century.
This particular example remains in near original condition, retaining its original cream painted finish, factory capped springs and stamped base. The 1209 is renowned for its superb movement, balance and fluid mechanical structure, and is today considered one of the most desirable early Anglepoise versions for collectors and interior designers alike.
The 1209 is an evolution of the first prototype model (1932–1933) which featured a taller base. As with many early Anglepoise lamps, there are subtle variations depending on period and available production materials, adding further interest and collectability to surviving examples.
The longer arm configuration in this piece (54cm / 50 inches) distinguishes it further from the shorter-armed models produced during the same period. The lower arm features three structural elements — two at the front, one at the rear — supported by dual springs. The upper arm includes two springs and folds fully flat when extended.
Stamped to the base:
“The Anglepoise. Pat in the UK and Abroad. Made in England by Herbert Terry & Sons Ltd, Redditch.”
Rewired sympathetically using three-core braided cable and fully PAT tested.
