Full Description

This early 19th century English elm six plank coffer chest is a well-proportioned example of Georgian country furniture, combining practical storage with the honest simplicity associated with English vernacular craftsmanship.

Constructed in elm using the traditional six plank method, the chest displays a warm golden colour and attractive natural grain throughout. The front is enhanced by simple chipped carved decoration to the corner edges, while the shaped scalloped plinth adds visual interest and refinement to the overall form.

Lifting the lid reveals an internal hinged till, often referred to as a candle box. These compartments were traditionally used to store candles, documents, keys, money and other household valuables, and their survival is an increasingly desirable feature among collectors of early country furniture.

With its low profile, generous width and relatively shallow depth, this elm coffer chest remains highly versatile within modern interiors. Equally suited to use as a blanket chest, hallway storage chest or occasional piece of furniture, it retains the understated appeal and functionality that have made early English coffers enduringly popular.

Condition

Constructed from six elm planks, the chest displays the natural movement and shrinkage expected of early timber furniture. The rear board has warped slightly over time, creating gaps at either end and revealing some of the original iron nail fixings. The coffer remains structurally sound, and these honest signs of age add to its character and authenticity.
