This exceptional six-plank oak coffer, dating from the Charles I and Charles II period (circa 1640–1660), is a powerful and atmospheric example of early English domestic furniture. Often referred to as a six-board chest, this form represents one of the most enduring and practical furniture types of the 17th century.
Crafted entirely from solid oak, the chest is decorated with a striking array of carved motifs. Lunettes, hearts, and fleur-de-lys are worked into the façade, forming a symbolic visual language associated with love, fidelity, protection, and status.
