Own a rare 18th century carved oak coffer chest, a fine example of Georgian oak furniture that doubles as a practical storage piece and historical artefact. Commissioned in 1791 by the AKEN family, this antique oak coffer originates from the German Netherlands border and showcases extraordinary craftsmanship.
The standout single plank oak lid is seldom seen in period coffers, adding significant value. The front features phoenix and vine carvings, fielded floral panels, and an inscribed central panel reading AKEN 1791 beneath a floral crown. Built with a peg joined oak frame, the chest retains its original lock and latch (key missing), while the interior contains dual candle tills, their lids now absent. Despite later hinge replacements, it preserves a rich authentic patina.
Raised on carved stile legs, this coffer is both robust and imposing. Measuring approximately 77 cm high × 129 cm wide × 59 cm deep, it rivals other Georgian oak coffers on today’s antique market, where comparable pieces are valued between £500 and £1,500 depending on condition and provenance.
