Full Description
This antique Austrian walnut blanket chest dates to the late 19th century and reflects the enduring practicality and restrained geometry associated with Alpine furniture of the period.
Constructed in solid walnut, the front is formed from a wide single plank — a construction method entirely consistent with Central European vernacular work of the 1870–1890 period. The timber displays natural oxidisation, dry warmth and layered surface wear accumulated through decades of use rather than modern intervention.
The lid features traditional breadboard ends, designed to stabilise wide boards and prevent movement over time — a detail commonly found in Austrian and Bavarian regional chests of the later 19th century.
The lid is supported by original hand-forged iron staple and pintle hinges, a traditional form of blacksmith-made hardware commonly found on Alpine blanket chests of the period. Their hand-worked form and heavy forged construction reinforce the authenticity of the piece and remain fully functional.
Details such as the wide plank construction, breadboard-ended lid and hand-forged staple hinges are characteristic features of late 19th century Alpine furniture, supporting the Austrian regional attribution.
Above the original brass escutcheon sits a stepped geometric moulding, a subtle decorative device associated with Alpine craftsmanship. Importantly, the escutcheon remains secured with its original nail pins, reinforcing the integrity and authenticity of the piece.
Raised on simple block feet with a moulded lower rail, the proportions feel grounded and architectural. Internally the chest offers generous storage, originally intended for linens and textiles, and equally suited today to blankets, throws or hallway storage.
The restrained geometric detailing and practical construction are typical of Alpine vernacular furniture, often described within the tradition of Austrian Bauernmöbel — the robust rural furnishings produced for country households during the 19th century.
The overall impression is one of quiet strength, material honesty and genuine age — a decorative yet historically consistent example of late 19th century Austrian provincial furniture.
For collectors and designers drawn to authentic European country house interiors, this piece sits naturally within our broader collection of antique blanket chests and Alpine storage furniture.
