Full Description
This exquisite Arts & Crafts pottery candlestick was produced by Wardle & Co of Stoke-on-Trent around 1871, at a pivotal moment in British decorative arts. The piece displays a beautifully proportioned, symmetrical form, finished in gentle, natural hues that are entirely characteristic of the Arts & Crafts aesthetic.
The base is clearly stamped with the Wardle & Co name and original serial number, offering unquestionable authenticity and provenance. Such markings are increasingly scarce, making this example particularly desirable to collectors and enthusiasts of British studio pottery.
Wardle & Co was founded following the death of William Wardle, when his son James Wardle passed the business into the care of his wife in 1871. Under her stewardship, the firm flourished, producing pottery that aligned closely with the ideals of craftsmanship, honesty of materials, and artistic integrity. The company continued until 1935, leaving behind a legacy of refined yet purposeful ceramics.
The Arts & Crafts movement, emerging in the late 19th century, sought to counteract industrial mass production by celebrating the handmade object. Influenced by figures such as William Morris, John Ruskin, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the movement emphasised beauty through simplicity, proportion, and natural materials. This candlestick is a fine embodiment of those ideals.
A rare survival in superb original condition, this Wardle & Co candlestick would sit comfortably within a serious Arts & Crafts collection, or as a quietly striking accent in a thoughtfully curated interior.
