Full Description
The construction of this late Victorian pine trunk centres on protection and handling. Iron straps follow the curve of the domed lid, while corner fittings and edge studs reinforce vulnerable points. Timber knock bars stand proud of the body, and skid runners beneath raise the base away from direct contact with the floor.
The dog-tooth edging adds a measured decorative detail to this otherwise practical construction. Its repeated notches provide a distinct outline alongside the broad pine surfaces and darker iron fittings.
Across the timber, warm brown tones give way to lighter, worn areas. Marks, fading and changes in colour record handling and use, giving the trunk a varied surface that suits its substantial form. The iron carrying handles differ slightly in shape, a detail retained within its present condition.
Inside, the lining and leather lid stays survive alongside a label and the number “113”. These offer tangible traces of the trunk’s history, although they do not establish an owner, destination or specific original use.
