Pair of Antique Carved Oak Open Barley-Twist Candlesticks
Few candlesticks possess this degree of movement, scale and craftsmanship. This pair of antique carved oak open barley-twist candlesticks rises through two deeply pierced, continuously entwined spirals, their precision made still more striking by the richly figured oak grain that follows every turn. Dating to circa 1900, they retain their original naturally aged brass sconces and what appears to be the original green baize beneath the weighted bases.

Full Description
The defining feature of these antique oak candlesticks is the remarkable open barley-twist construction. Each stem is formed as two deeply carved strands turning continuously around one another, creating a sequence of evenly spaced openings through the centre. The spirals remain full and rounded throughout, giving the candlesticks both visual movement and considerable presence.
The quality of the oak is equally important. Its pronounced grain travels around the carved stems, becoming particularly vivid across the raised turns. Lighter figuring catches the light while darker colour has settled naturally within the recesses, allowing the depth and precision of the carving to remain clearly visible.
A succession of ring-turned mouldings provides a measured transition between the open stems and the flared candle cups above. Each candlestick retains its original dished brass sconce, complete with the softly oxidised and naturally aged surface acquired through use.
The broad circular bases are weighted for stability and constructed with concentric stepped and recessed turnings. Their generous 15 cm diameter gives the tall stems a properly balanced stance, both structurally and visually. Green baize, believed to be original, remains beneath each base.
The open barley twist draws upon a decorative form established in 17th-century furniture and revived with particular enthusiasm during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Dating to circa 1900, this pair interprets that earlier tradition on an unusually tall and sculptural scale.
At 37 cm high, the candlesticks have sufficient presence to stand independently as decorative objects. Displayed together, their matched form, richly figured oak and preserved aged surfaces produce a strong architectural rhythm without appearing overly formal.

Width: 15 cm

Materials
Solid oak with a naturally aged surface and patina.
Turned and carved open barley-twist stems, ring-turned upper and lower sections, broad weighted circular bases, original brass sconces and what appears to be the original green baize beneath.
Condition
Good antique condition with surface wear, small marks, visual natural cracks in the timber and tonal variation consistent with age and use. The oak retains a rich established patina, with natural wear across the raised turnings and darker colour within the carved recesses.
The original brass sconces retain their naturally aged surfaces, with old wax residue and oxidation visible. There are minor age-related lines and small irregularities around the timber candle cups.
The green baize beneath the weighted bases shows expected wear and discolouration. These details form part of the candlesticks’ history and are clearly shown in the photographs. Stable and structurally sound.
General Note:
Our pieces have lived a life before coming to Campbell Vintage. As genuine antique and vintage items, they will naturally display signs of age, use and character, including minor marks, losses, wear, fading and patina acquired over time.
Where there is visible historic evidence of woodworm, the piece is carefully inspected and treated as a precaution, regardless of whether there are any signs of current activity.
These characteristics form part of the piece’s authenticity and history. Please refer to the detailed condition report and photographs for a full assessment.
Origin and Period
English, late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1900.
Styling Suggestions
At 37 cm high, these candlesticks have sufficient scale for a chimneypiece, console table, sideboard or substantial chest. Their strong vertical form works particularly well where a room needs height without visual heaviness.
The warm oak and aged brass sit naturally within period and country-house interiors, while the sculptural open stems provide a strong material contrast against quieter contemporary surfaces.
This now explains what the candlesticks actually contribute to a room rather than merely listing possible locations.
Frequently Asked Question
Are the brass sconces and baize original?
The naturally aged brass sconces appear original to the candlesticks. The green baize beneath the weighted bases also appears to be original, although this cannot be confirmed with absolute certainty.
Why These Candlesticks Stand Apart
Many barley-twist candlesticks employ a simpler solid spiral. Here, the stems have been deeply opened to create two continuously entwined strands, requiring considerably greater control in their execution.
Their unusually tall scale, pronounced oak grain, weighted bases and preserved original details give this matched pair a strength and integrity that more conventional examples often lack.
This introduces a meaningful comparison and avoids merely repeating that the carving is attractive.
