Few individual candlesticks possess this degree of movement, height and craftsmanship. Carved from richly figured oak, this antique open barley-twist candlestick rises through two deeply pierced strands that turn continuously around an open centre.
Dating to circa 1900, it retains its original naturally aged brass sconce, broad weighted base and what appears to be the original green baize beneath. Its 37 cm height gives it considerable presence as a functional candlestick or sculptural antique object.

Full Description
The defining feature of this antique oak candlestick is its remarkable open barley-twist construction. Rather than forming a conventional solid spiral, the stem has been deeply carved to create two separate rounded strands turning continuously around one another.
Removing the timber between the spirals required considerable control. Each strand needed to retain sufficient fullness and strength while the openings remained evenly spaced. The result is a stem that appears both substantial and unexpectedly light, with the surrounding background visible through its centre.
The pronounced grain of the oak strengthens this sense of movement. Lighter figuring travels across the raised turns, while darker colour has settled naturally within the carved recesses. As the candlestick is viewed from different angles, the relationship between grain, carving and open space continually changes.
Ring-turned mouldings provide measured transitions above and below the spiral. These frame the energetic central section and connect it visually to the candle cup and broad circular base.
The original naturally aged brass sconce introduces a quiet contrast of material and colour. Its softened surface, oxidation and traces associated with use sit comfortably against the warmth of the oak rather than appearing overly polished or renewed.
At the base, concentric stepped turnings establish a firm architectural foundation. The concealed weighting provides stability, while what appears to be the original green baize protects the surface beneath.
The barley twist developed from a decorative language particularly associated with 17th-century furniture and woodwork. It was revived enthusiastically during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, when earlier English forms were reinterpreted for furniture and domestic decorative objects.
Used alone, this candlestick has a strong sculptural quality. Its height and open construction allow it to introduce vertical form without visual heaviness, whether placed on a chimneypiece, sideboard, console table or substantial chest.

The original brass sconce retains its naturally aged surface, with old wax residue and oxidation visible. The green baize beneath the weighted base shows expected wear and discolouration.

Its individual form lends itself to a less formal arrangement than a conventional matched pair. It can stand beside books, ceramics, framed artwork or a small collection of objects without requiring symmetrical placement.

Are the brass sconce and green baize original?
The naturally aged brass sconce appears original to the candlestick. The worn green baize beneath the weighted base also appears to be original, although this cannot be confirmed with absolute certainty.
Why This Candlestick Stands Apart
Many barley-twist candlesticks employ a simpler solid spiral. Here, the centre has been opened to leave two continuously entwined strands, an inherently more demanding form of construction.
