Description

Simple, functional and beautifully honest, this antique English dairy milking stool represents the everyday craftsmanship of Britain's rural farming communities during the early twentieth century. Designed for practical use rather than ornament, its compact proportions allowed dairy farmers to move comfortably while hand milking cows and goats, whilst the four splayed legs provided stability on uneven stone floors and packed earth.

The stool has been constructed from a single solid hardwood seat supported by four individually turned legs, each fitted into blind angled mortices beneath the seat. Unlike earlier vernacular examples with through-tenons secured by wedges, this later construction reflects the practical workshop methods commonly employed during the early twentieth century whilst remaining entirely traditional in character.

The underside retains the original central turning point used during manufacture, evidence of how the seat was held whilst being shaped. The seat itself has developed a gentle undulating surface over time, the result of natural movement within the solid timber rather than later alteration, adding further authenticity and character to this well-used working object.

Its original dark brown-black painted finish has mellowed beautifully through decades of daily use, with the exposed timber around the seat edge and feet recording years of honest wear as it was repeatedly moved across farmhouse floors. These natural abrasions are not flaws but a tangible record of its working life within the British dairy.

Today, antique dairy milking stools remain highly sought after as examples of vernacular country furniture. Their restrained form, rich patina and practical scale allow them to work equally well as decorative accent pieces, occasional seating, plant stands or sculptural objects within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
