Description
This antique Arts & Crafts oak low stool combines a simple domestic form with unusually expressive joinery. Made around 1900, it stands on two solid slab-end supports, each splayed slightly outwards and cut below with a central arch to create a pair of broad, stable feet.
Two substantial oak apron rails extend between the end supports. Their tenons pass completely through the slab ends and remain visible externally, where they are secured by shaped wooden keys and smaller retaining pegs. These prominent fixings are structurally functional, but their rounded form also turns the method of construction into an important decorative feature.
Although the arrangement resembles the joinery sometimes used in dismantlable furniture, the seat is secured to the base from beneath with traditional flat-headed slotted screws. The exposed keys should therefore be understood primarily as an effective and visually considered method of securing the through-tenons rather than evidence of a purpose-made travelling stool.
The solid oak top has a softly moulded edge interrupted by four concave corner details. At its centre is an elongated S-shaped carrying aperture, making the stool easy to move while introducing a further controlled curve into its otherwise rectilinear form. The shape is echoed below by the fret-cut arches running across the end supports and lower edges of the aprons.
Its dark surface retains visible oak grain, gentle tonal variation and wear acquired through use. At only 26 centimetres high, this is best understood as a low domestic stool: suitable beside a fireside chair, beneath a console, as a footstool or as a small occasional surface for books and objects.
