Full Description

This large African abstract mahogany sculpture is built around a deceptively complex piece of carving. Formed from a single solid block, the seated figure has been opened through the centre so that its limbs, body and surrounding spaces become part of one continuous composition.

At 51 cm high, it has real physical presence. The rounded head rests upon one hand while the body folds inward, creating an unmistakably contemplative pose. From the front, the figure appears quiet and introspective; viewed from either side, the limbs lengthen into sweeping arcs; from the reverse, the human form gives way to a more architectural arrangement of curves, openings and balanced weight.

This ability to change as it is turned is one of the sculpture’s defining qualities. It is not an object with a single fixed front, but a fully three-dimensional work intended to be seen from several directions. Light passes through the pierced areas, separating the limbs and casting changing shadows across the mahogany.

The carving recalls the psychological stillness of Rodin’s The Thinker, while its rounded modelling and treatment of solid form against open space echo the wider sculptural language associated with Henry Moore. These references describe its visual character rather than suggesting a direct attribution to either artist.
