Full Description

Construction gives this eighteenth-century country oak side table its distinctive presence. A substantial drawer sits within a framed oak body, supported by baluster-turned front legs and plain rear uprights. Side stretchers brace the supports, while mouldings above and below the drawer provide a clear horizontal balance.

The single drawer has an unusually architectural front. Applied, mitred timber mouldings outline two rectangular panels, divided by a central upright carrying the brass escutcheon. Two brass drop handles complete the arrangement. Large dovetails are visible where the drawer sides meet the front.

The oak surface is central to the table’s appeal. Strong grain, uneven texture, softened edges and old repairs give the timber a refined rawness. The top retains considerable surface variation, with applied moulded edging secured by visible iron nails. These details reward close inspection without overwhelming the table’s restrained form.

Framed side panels contrast with the broad, roughly finished rear board. Together, they suggest the practical priorities associated with vernacular furniture: attention to the visible elevations alongside straightforward construction elsewhere. The maker and original setting remain unrecorded.

At 72 cm wide and 45 cm deep, this antique oak side table offers useful proportions for a hallway, landing or living room. Its substantial drawer provides concealed storage, while the top accommodates a lamp or a small group of everyday objects. The plain rear supports give it a relatively flat back profile.

Dimensions (Approx.)

Height: 82 cm
Width: 72 cm
Depth: 45 cm

Materials

Solid oak; dovetailed drawer construction; framed and pegged side construction; applied mitred mouldings; turned front supports; brass handles and escutcheon; iron nails. The surface retains an aged patina with varied colour, texture and wear.

Condition

A richly aged oak surface with wear, marks, splits, old sympathetic repairs and localised timber loss accumulated through long use. The bun feet retain worn, reduced profiles, with splits and timber loss to their undersides, as shown in the close-up photographs. Ancient insect holes are visible in places a precautionary treatment has been applied. The antique brass drawer pulls have some age but are later replacements.

The table remains solid and substantial, with the weight of dense oak. The retained lock is not operational, and no key is present. The detailed photographs form an important part of the condition description.

General Note:

Our pieces have lived a life before coming to Campbell Vintage. As genuine antique and vintage items, they will naturally display signs of age, use and character, including minor marks, losses, wear, fading and patina acquired over time.

Where there is visible historic evidence of woodworm, the piece is carefully inspected and treated as a precaution, regardless of whether there are any signs of current activity.

These characteristics form part of the piece’s authenticity and history. Please refer to the detailed condition report and photographs for a full assessment.

Origin / Period

18th century, within the country vernacular furniture tradition. Maker and precise place of origin unrecorded.

Styling Suggestions

Use as a compact hall table, a side table beside a chair or a landing table with drawer storage. Its textured oak sits comfortably alongside plaster walls, stone floors and simpler contemporary furnishings.

FAQ

Does the front contain two drawers?
No. It is one deep drawer, with applied mouldings creating two framed panels.

Does the drawer lock work?
No. The lock is retained but does not work, and there is no key.

Why This Object Stands Apart

The contrast between careful framing and richly textured, time-worn oak gives this table its particular identity. Paired decorative panels conceal a single drawer, while the shaped front supports and practical rear construction reveal different priorities within the same design.
