A teapoy originally referred to a three-legged stand in India (from Hindi "tin pai", meaning "three feet"), but by the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain, it came to mean a small tea caddy table, often used to store tea leaves and related accessories. These were especially fashionable during the Georgian and Victorian periods as tea drinking became a highly ritualized domestic activity. These teapoy tables were usually placed next to a ladies chair for her afternoon tea ritual.

This Chinoiserie Teapoy table likely features detailed hand-painted decoration with gold and japanning. Japanning is a decorative lacquer work technique developed in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries as an imitation of traditional Asian (especially Japanese and Chinese) lacquer finishes. It became especially popular in decorative furniture, boxes, and trays, often used in styles like Chinoiserie. This Teapoy may have had individual containers at some point.
