An antique arched sectional mirror with six (6) sections and the original foxed mirror plate. This dates to c1910 and is embellished with a stiff leaf design, favoured in the classical and neoclassical 18th and 19th century design periods.
I would say this Giltwood Mirror Frame has spent most its life in one home as there is little evidence of it being transported around over the years, due to its remarkable condition.
The stiff leaf motif is a decorative motif rooted in classical and neoclassical design, commonly seen in early 20th-century giltwood mirror frames. Characterized by rigid, upright leaves arranged in symmetrical, rhythmic patterns, the motif is a stylized interpretation of foliage—less naturalistic than acanthus or laurel, and more geometric in form.
Originating from Romanesque and Gothic architecture, particularly in the carved capitals of columns, stiff leaf designs became popular again during the revivalist movements of the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in Neoclassical and Edwardian styles. On giltwood frames—carved wood finished with gold leaf—these motifs often adorn the corners, edges, or central cartouches, adding a formal and refined aesthetic.
When you see a stiff leaf detail on a mirror frame from the early 1900s, you're looking at a piece that echoes the grandeur of antiquity and the skilled craftsmanship of traditional design.
Take a look at the back as this is always a great eye opener and reveals just as much about a mirror than anything else. This particular mirror back is made of a hardwood, comprises of two sections, the outer frame and the rebated inner back frame with the original screws, highlighting the additional joinery work to create a great mirror.
