A beautifully cast Japanese bronze Bonsai or Suiban display vessel, dating from the late Meiji period (circa 1895–1910). This exceptional example features lively dragon reliefs swirling amid stylised waves and clouds — a traditional Meiji motif symbolising renewal, vitality, and auspicious energy.
The rectangular form is raised on bamboo-style legs, gracefully extending from the moulded base and echoing nature-inspired Japanese design. Each element is hand-chased and finished, giving texture and subtle movement to the bronze surface.
To the underside appears the cast studio mark 渡雲齋造 (Tōun-sai zō), translating to “Made by the Tōun-sai Studio.” This name is associated with the Murata Seimin school of metalworkers, renowned for their refined bronzes and dedication to traditional okimono and Suiban forms at the turn of the 20th century.
Measuring 32 cm wide × 19.5 cm deep × 9 cm high, this vessel is ideal for use as a bonsai or suiseki display piece, or as a decorative centrepiece in a refined interior setting. Its mellow patina, balanced proportions, and lively casting make it an outstanding example of Japanese Meiji metal artistry — elegant, contemplative, and full of presence.
