Christian Aigens study of A girl oil on canvas. Contemplating the world outside and probably thinking, have I got to stand here for much longer, as any child might do.

There is so much going on in this oil painting, the view out across the Danish water, the boat upside down and a line for drying beside it. How many time has some stood at this window looking out to sea, contemplating the chores of the day, or waiting for the fishing boat to come back. Love the period clothing and head scarf to keep the wind out of your hair.

Such an intriguing painting and we believe it was painted at the same time as the 'Study of a Boy' by the same artist. The style, colour, tones and composition are so close. Look closely at the two children as they have very similar features, especially the noses and eyes.

Innocence captured in the light by Christian Aigens who lived between  21st July 1870 & 15th March 1940, a Danish painter who spent a lot of time in Copenhagen, Denmark & mainly painted portraits. He was taught by Peder Severin Krøyer and Laurits Tuxe, before going on to the Art Academy from 1888-90. He tended to favor this style painting when you compare this to his other work. I think he captures the atmosphere of the room perfectly with dimly lit rooms and a backdrop of a home.

There are two Christian Aigens portraits held in the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Denmark. One of Chr. Engelstoft and Professor Harald Høffding, so to me this says everything.

The frame is old, may not be the original, but is complimentary.

Signed to the bottom left hand side.

PeriodPossibly Late 19th Century to first quarter of the 1900's.
