Own a truly unique 18th century carved oak coffer chest, dated 1791 and commissioned by the AKEN family. This remarkable antique storage chest likely originates from the German Netherlands border, showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship and heritage.
The standout single plank oak lid is rare for the period, making this piece even more exceptional. The front boasts intricate phoenix and vine carvings, raised and fielded floral panels, and a central panel inscribed AKEN beneath a floral crown framing the date 1791. The peg joined solid oak frame features the original lock and latch (though the key is missing), and inside, dual candle tills remain, albeit missing their lids. Despite later replaced hinges, the coffer retains an authentic patina befitting its age.
Elevated on carved stile legs, the coffer is robust and imposing. With dimensions of approximately 77 cm high × 129 cm wide × 59 cm deep, it stands as a fine example of a Georgian oak coffer chest from the late 1700s, comparable to other pieces valued between £500 and £1,500 on the UK market.
