Full Description

This monumental Moroccan Berber flatweave rug is a striking example of mid-20th century tribal weaving from the Middle Atlas mountains, distinguished not only by its powerful colour and symbolic language, but by its exceptional width, a feature rarely encountered in Moroccan flatweaves.

Handwoven by Berber artisans for domestic use rather than export, the rug displays a rhythmic sequence of horizontal bands filled with abstract lozenges, stepped forms, and protective motifs — a visual language deeply rooted in Berber culture. These symbols were traditionally woven as expressions of identity, protection, fertility, and journey, rather than as purely decorative elements.

The colour palette is particularly strong: a deep madder-derived red ground anchors the composition, enlivened by indigo blues, warm saffron oranges, and soft ivory tones. Subtle irregularities in weave density and motif placement speak to its hand-crafted origin and lend the piece an unmistakable authenticity.

Unlike later tourist-made Moroccan rugs, this example was woven on a village loom, resulting in its unusual architectural proportions. The decorative knotted fringe and the variation in wool thickness further confirm its tribal, non-commercial origin.

This is a rug that carries presence — ideal for large interiors, long rooms, or as a dramatic grounding piece in contemporary or traditional settings alike.

This piece forms part of our wider collection of authentic tribal and flatwoven rugs, where each textile is selected for its craftsmanship, age, and individuality. • Minimalist rooms needing warmth and texture

It pairs particularly well with natural wood, stone floors, and restrained modern furniture, where its scale and colour can fully assert themselves.

FAQ

Is this an Afghan or Baluch kilim?
No. The colour palette, construction, scale, and design language are entirely inconsistent with Afghan or Baluch weaving traditions. This rug is Moroccan Berber in origin.

Is the rug antique?
It is vintage rather than antique, dating to the mid-20th century.

Are the dyes natural?
The palette and wool characteristics strongly suggest traditional dye use, though full dye testing has not been undertaken.

Can this rug be used in high-traffic areas?
Yes, though its age and wear mean it is best suited to areas where its character can be appreciated rather than heavily trafficked zones.

Unique Points

  • Exceptionally wide Moroccan flatweave format

  • Authentic Berber tribal production

  • Strong decorative impact at architectural scale

  • Honest wear and untouched character

  • One-off piece with no modern equivalent
