Early 20th Century Inscribed North-West Persian Runner - 302cm
An Inscribed Persian Runner with an Intriguing Workshop Connection
This early 20th-century North-West Persian runner carries an integral woven inscription that appears to read “The work of Haji Jalili”—a name associated with one of the best-known late-19th-century carpet workshops of Tabriz.
Although the precise reading and workshop attribution remain subject to specialist confirmation, the inscription gives this hand-knotted Persian runner unusual historical and research interest alongside its deep indigo field, controlled workshop weave and Garrus-influenced design.

Description
The Early 20th Century Inscribed North-West Persian Runner is constructed with a hand-knotted wool pile over a pale cotton warp and weft foundation. Examination of the reverse reveals a regular workshop weave of approximately 150 knots per square inch, allowing the floral forms, angular vines and smaller geometric details to be clearly articulated.
A deep indigo-blue field carries a sequence of diamond-shaped medallions surrounded by flowering branches, palmettes and angular arabesques. Multiple borders frame the composition, moving through red, camel, pale blue, ivory and soft pink tones. Variations in colour and surface contribute to the runner’s depth and visible sense of age.
The design draws strongly upon the Garrus and Bijar weaving traditions of North-West Persia. Its cotton foundation, controlled drawing and carefully organised borders, however, indicate structured workshop production rather than a more loosely constructed village rug.
Of particular interest is the ivory cartouche woven into one end border. The Persian inscription appears to read “The work of Haji Jalili”.
Haji Jalili was an important late-19th-century Tabriz carpet producer whose workshop became known for finely woven carpets, sophisticated Persian designs and carefully balanced palettes. The inscription on this runner was formed as an integral part of the original weaving and was not added later.
Its presence provides an important line of research into the runner’s manufacture and history. Although the wording appears consistent with the Haji Jalili name, neither the reading nor a direct association with the celebrated Tabriz workshop has been independently authenticated. It is therefore presented as a considered possible connection rather than a confirmed maker attribution.
At 302 cm long and 72 cm wide, the runner has practical proportions for a hallway, entrance passage or corridor. Its indigo field provides visual weight, while the repeating medallions and closely worked borders draw the eye naturally along its length.

Materials and Construction
Hand-knotted wool pile over a pale cotton warp and weft foundation.
The weave measures approximately 150 knots per square inch, indicating regular North-West Persian workshop production.
Both long side cords have received later dark-blue wool overcasting for protection and stability.
Condition
Good antique condition with age-related surface wear, tonal variation and localised areas of reduced pile.
Several narrow transverse lines of pile loss expose small sections of the pale cotton foundation. These appear consistent with historic folding, wear and possible snagging. The underlying structure remains sound, without open splits or separation.
Both long edges have received later dark-blue wool overcasting. This displays minor unevenness, occasional exposed foundation threads and small loose fibres consistent with age and use.
The end fringes are reduced and uneven, with later red-and-blue securing stitches. No extensive reweaving, joined sections or large disruptive repairs have been identified.
The runner is offered in the condition in which it was acquired, with its natural wear, losses and historic repairs left visible. No cosmetic restoration has been undertaken, preserving the original surface, lived-in character and honest appearance developed through use.

Origin and Period
North-West Persia
Early 20th century, circa 1900–1930
The design belongs broadly to the Garrus and Bijar tradition, with possible connections to Tabriz workshop production.
Styling Suggestions
The runner’s narrow proportions make it particularly suitable for a hallway, entrance passage or corridor.
It could also be positioned beside a long dining table, behind a sofa or within a larger room where its indigo field can provide definition without overwhelming the surrounding furniture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Persian runner hand-knotted?
Yes. It has a hand-knotted wool pile over a cotton foundation, with an estimated density of approximately 150 knots per square inch.
What does the woven inscription say?
The Persian inscription appears to read “The work of Haji Jalili”. The reading and any associated workshop attribution remain subject to specialist confirmation.
Is this runner attributed to Haji Jalili?
A direct workshop attribution has not been established. The inscription presents a credible possible connection, but the runner is catalogued conservatively as an inscribed North-West Persian example.
Is the runner structurally sound?
Yes. It has age-related wear and several narrow transverse areas of pile loss, but the cotton foundation remains sound without open splits.
Why This Runner Stands Apart
The combination of workshop-quality construction, Garrus and Bijar-influenced drawing, practical proportions and an integral Persian inscription distinguishes this runner from more commonly encountered examples.
Its importance rests not on the possible name alone, but on the relationship between its weave, palette, design, age and still-evolving historical research.
