This antique Edwardian painted and gilt wall mirror dates from the early 1900s, circa 1910, and displays the refined decorative language typical of the period. The frame is finished in a rich claret red paint, developed over time into a softly mottled surface that lends warmth, depth, and authenticity.
The ornamentation is formed from moulded composition detailing applied over a solid wooden core — a hallmark of Edwardian craftsmanship — and highlighted with selectively burnished gilt. Surrounding the mirror plate is a finely beaded inner slip, complemented by a distinctive chain-linked outer border and repeating foliate scroll decoration to the rails and corners. The gilding has softened naturally on the raised areas, creating an attractive, time-worn patina.
The mirror retains its original period glass, which shows gentle and even age-related foxing consistent with early 20th-century examples. This subtle ageing enhances the character of the piece without detracting from clarity or usability.
