Full Description
This beautifully proportioned table is an authentic example of a William Gerrard ‘Gypsy’ table, produced in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, during the latter part of the 19th century. Gerrard described himself as a “Fancy Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer”, a contemporary term used for makers specialising in light, decorative furniture intended for domestic interiors.
The table is based on the traditional three-legged cricket table form, long valued for its natural stability and balanced silhouette. Gerrard’s interpretation is distinguished by its intelligent construction: the legs were originally made removable, allowing the table to be transported with ease at the time of purchase — a practical and forward-thinking solution well suited to Victorian domestic life.
Crafted in solid mahogany, the legs are turned with a faux bamboo effect, reflecting late-Victorian decorative tastes influenced by Japanism and informal design. Beneath the circular top sits a secondary under tier, adding both strength and useful surface space while preserving the table’s light, elegant proportions.
The underside retains the original paper trade label, printed “From William Gerrard, Fancy Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer, Lyndhurst, HANTS”, followed by the instruction “To Prevent Mistakes always address plainly above.” This wording relates to period correspondence and order dispatch, indicating that Gerrard supplied furniture beyond the immediate locality.
Matching workshop numbers remain visible to the legs and base plate, ensuring correct alignment during manufacture and early use. The table also retains its original fittings, including eyelets and leather washers, designed to secure the structure once in place — subtle but telling details that speak to careful craftsmanship rather than modern assembly requirements.
Today, the table is presented fully assembled, stable, and ready for immediate use, retaining the character and quiet ingenuity of its original design.
