Description

This Late Victorian Mahogany Oval Tilt-Top Tripod Table with Open Reed Column is a well-proportioned interpretation of the earlier Georgian tripod table form, combining traditional construction with a more decorative late 19th century treatment. The oval mahogany top immediately distinguishes the table from the more commonly encountered circular examples, its gently rounded form finished with a subtle thumbnail moulded edge.

The table is particularly notable for its unusual open reed column. Applied carved and shaped mahogany elements are arranged around a solid central structural shaft, producing an open, almost birdcage-like effect. The reeds are decorative rather than structural, giving the column visual lightness while retaining the strength of a conventional central support. It is an inventive detail that draws attention to the construction without making the table overly elaborate.

The oval top is fitted with an original brass snap catch mechanism, allowing it to be released and raised vertically when required. Unlike earlier tripod tables incorporating a revolving birdcage mechanism beneath the top, this example tilts only. When raised, the oval profile and open column become particularly visible, revealing the table's construction and sculptural qualities.

Below, the column meets a traditional tripod base formed from three shaped cabriole legs. Each leg incorporates a recessed carved reserve, introducing restrained decorative detail while maintaining the flowing outline of the base. The relationship between the oval top, slender open column and spreading tripod legs gives the table a particularly balanced silhouette.

The mahogany has developed a warm, mellow surface with variations in tone and light wear acquired through age and use. Its scale makes the table particularly adaptable: substantial enough to work beside an armchair or sofa, yet compact enough for use as a wine table, lamp table or occasional side table in both period and contemporary interiors.

Dimensions

Height: 72 cm (closed), 103 cm (tilted)
Width: 61 cm
Depth: 43 cm

Materials

Solid mahogany
Hand-turned and carved elements
Brass snap catch mechanism
Traditional joinery with later 19th century construction methods

Condition

Good antique condition with surface wear consistent with age and use. The mahogany displays light marks, minor scratches and areas of gentle fading, contributing to the established surface and patina.

A small historic repair is visible to the top. This has aged sympathetically and now reads much like a natural feature or knot within the timber rather than distracting from the overall appearance. A leather spacer has been added to the tilt mechanism to remove a small amount of play when the top is closed, allowing it to sit securely with a firm, well-fitted connection.

The original brass tilt mechanism remains in working order. The table is structurally sound and stable, with a warm and well-established mahogany patina throughout.

Styling Suggestions

The compact proportions make this late Victorian tripod table particularly useful beside a sofa or armchair as a lamp, drinks or occasional table. Its oval top also allows it to sit comfortably where a circular table might feel too broad, while the open reed column provides enough visual interest for the table to stand independently within a hallway, drawing room, study or bedroom.

FAQ

Q: Does the table rotate as well as tilt?
No. The oval top tilts using its original brass snap catch mechanism but does not rotate.

Q: Is the open reed column structural?
No. The table has a solid central structural support, with the open reed elements applied around it to create the decorative column.

Q: What could the table be used for?
Its proportions make it suitable as a wine table, occasional table, lamp table or compact side table beside a sofa or armchair.

Why This Object Stands Apart

The open reed column is the defining feature of this late Victorian tripod table. Rather than relying on a conventional turned pedestal, the maker has surrounded the solid central support with individually formed decorative reeds, creating a lighter and more architectural profile. Combined with the less common oval tilt-top, original brass mechanism and restrained carving to the cabriole legs, it gives a familiar English furniture form a distinctly individual character.
