This Large Copper Conical Planter is a striking piece of functional art, combining Victorian industrial heritage with elegant garden design. Originally crafted circa 1889 as a liquid filtration vat, this conical copper vessel was built to last. Today it is reborn as a flower display pot or dramatic garden planter.
Stamped with “3M MAIGNENS Patent”, this item bears the mark of P. A. Maignen’s original filtering invention, filed June 4 1889 (Serial No. 313,068). The patinated copper body retains hints of its past life, while the heavy duty cast iron triangular stand provides stable elevation and architectural presence.
At approximately 125 cm tall with a base footprint of ~60 × 61 cm, this planter commands attention in any space. The conical opening spans ~33 cm in diameter, and the tap base adds character (though not functional in this form). The triangular iron legs are slightly splayed for balance and visual interest. At one point a version of this filter system may have had a lid.
In use it can be planted directly with shrubs or cascading foliage, or filled with floral arrangements to create a centrepiece in a hallway or conservatory. Its height and form make it perfect for indoor-outdoor transition zones such as sunrooms, verandas, or grand entrance halls.
