Full Description
This antique Zanzibar coffer chest is a powerful expression of coastal East African craftsmanship, infused with centuries of cultural exchange and ritual significance. Handcrafted from richly aged teak hardwood and adorned with elaborate brass studwork, strapping, and carved detailing, it embodies the distinctive aesthetic born from Swahili, Arab, Indian, and Portuguese influences along the Indian Ocean trade routes.
Traditionally used to store dowries, ceremonial gifts, and personal valuables, Zanzibar coffers were more than furniture — they were symbols of status, protection, and prosperity. This example dates to the mid-19th century and retains many original features that elevate it beyond a decorative object into true collectible territory.
The façade is particularly striking, featuring a bold brass stud arrangement forming a V-shaped clasp motif, flanked by three ornately decorated drawers. This drawer configuration is reminiscent of European mule chests of the 18th century, reflecting the cross-continental design dialogue of the spice trade era.
The top is bordered with decorative brass studs and crowned with a raised pyramid motif incorporating a cross-like symbol — a design commonly found on Zanzibar chests and believed to carry talismanic or protective meaning. Solid brass side handles remain intact and usable, while the interior reveals its original till or candle box, once used to secure smaller valuables.
Time has softened the surfaces beautifully. The teak wood displays a warm, time-earned patina, while the brass elements show gentle oxidation and wear that only enhances their authenticity. This is not simply storage — it is a historic artefact, a conversation piece, and a deeply atmospheric addition to any interior.
