FULL DESCRIPTION
This Antique Victorian Ash Side Table is defined by its structure and material rather than ornament. The ash timber gives the table a clear, open grain, creating a surface that reads with depth and variation without excess weight.
The rectangular top sits cleanly above a single drawer, its front worked with restrained horizontal fluting. This detail introduces texture without disrupting the overall balance. To the sides, dummy drawer fronts maintain symmetry, reinforcing the table’s measured proportions.
The legs are ring-turned and joined by shaped corner brackets, adding a subtle architectural quality as the form transitions downward. These brackets create rhythm between apron and leg, before the structure resolves into a full pot board stretcher. The pot board grounds the table visually and provides practical storage at floor level.
The original brass handle remains in place, softened in tone through age. Inside the drawer, the surviving Harrison & Son paper label anchors the table to a specific regional workshop in Lancashire during the early 1880s. This level of attribution adds both historical clarity and collector relevance.
The table sits with a quiet confidence. Its proportions are practical, its construction honest, and its material expressive. It functions easily within both traditional and contemporary interiors where natural timber and restrained form are valued.
