Full Description

This charming antique armchair is a fine example of traditional North Country chair making, most likely originating from Lancashire in the early to mid-19th century. Rural workshops across the Pennine valleys produced practical furniture for farmhouse and cottage life, and this piece retains all the character and honest craftsmanship of that tradition.

The back is formed with two rows of delicately turned spindle balusters set between shaped rails beneath a softly arched cresting rail. This double-tier arrangement gives the chair a pleasing visual rhythm while maintaining strength and durability.

The arms sweep gently forward in a flattened curve, supported by turned arm posts above the front legs. Beneath the seat runs a turned stretcher centred with a classic ball knop, a feature commonly found on Lancashire vernacular chairs of the period.

The rush seat is woven in the traditional four-way pattern and provides both comfort and a wonderful natural contrast to the warm tones of the oak. Over time the timber has developed a rich colour and surface patina that only age and use can produce.

Chairs of this type were typically positioned beside the hearth or kitchen table, offering sturdy everyday seating in country homes. Today they bring a sense of heritage and authenticity to interiors, equally at home in a farmhouse kitchen, country cottage, or layered period interior.

You may also wish to explore our wider selection of traditional seating in the North Country Chairs collection, where similar vernacular pieces can be discovered.
