Indo-Islamic Carved Mirror with Architectural Detail
This large antique Indian carved mirror presents as a piece shaped as much by architecture as by ornament. The frame is defined by a pronounced arched opening, its form articulated through a sequence of cusped curves beneath a layered frieze of carved bands.
Above, a rhythmic field of scrolling foliate carving runs horizontally, contained within a structured border that introduces a subtle architectural order. Below, the carving becomes more expressive. Stylised fish motifs emerge clearly within the arch, interwoven with leaf forms and flowing lines, giving the surface a more symbolic and narrative quality.
The vertical elements are deeply worked and column-like in their treatment, reinforcing the sense of weight and structure. Across the whole surface, the carving sits in varying depths, catching light unevenly and revealing the hand behind its making. Tool marks, slight irregularities, and tonal variation in the timber contribute to a surface that feels active rather than fixed.
The mirror plate is a later addition, set within what was likely once part of a larger architectural element. As a carved wooden mirror, it retains that origin — less a purely decorative object, more a fragment of a wider interior language.
