The changing planes catch the light and visually lighten the structure while retaining the timber required for the substantial pegged joints.

Description

This 19th Century Pine Cricket Table is an excellent example of traditional country furniture, combining practical craftsmanship with a form that has remained remarkably unchanged for generations. Constructed from mellow pine, the table retains its original circular top formed from two wide planks, supported on three elegantly tapered legs joined by a substantial triangular under-tier shelf.

Despite their simplicity, cricket tables are among the most intelligently designed forms of vernacular furniture. Their three-legged construction provides exceptional stability, even on uneven stone or timber floors, while the triangular arrangement creates inherent structural rigidity. It is this thoughtful engineering, rather than decoration, that has ensured the design has endured for centuries.

Closer examination reveals the quality of its construction. The frame is assembled using traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, with paired hardwood pegs securing each rail firmly into the legs. This mechanical method of construction predates modern fixings and demonstrates the confidence of a maker who relied upon sound joinery rather than screws or metal brackets.

The three splayed legs are particularly well considered, each worked to an unusual faceted profile with a pronounced V-shaped front and softened chamfered rear, creating an irregular lozenge-like section. The changing planes catch the light and visually lighten the structure while retaining the timber required for the substantial pegged joints.

The triangular under-tier is equally well executed. Rather than simply meeting the legs, each of the three shelf boards has been individually fettled with original V-shaped housings, carefully cut to accommodate the angle of each splayed leg. This labour-intensive detail locks the shelf neatly into the framework while reinforcing the structure, providing both strength and visual harmony.

The repeated use of triangular geometry is one of the table's defining characteristics. From the three-legged footprint and triangular shelf to the central support block and framing beneath the top, the maker has consistently employed one of the strongest geometric forms in construction. The result is a table that feels light in appearance yet exceptionally solid in use.

The mellow pine has acquired a rich colour and honest surface through decades of everyday life. Gentle wear, minor marks and subtle undulations within the timber all contribute to its authenticity without detracting from its practicality. Its 79 cm diameter top is particularly generous for the form and, combined with a comfortable table height of 71 cm, gives it considerably more versatility than a smaller occasional cricket table. As well as serving as a lamp, centre or side table, it makes a wonderfully intimate supper or dining table for two, particularly within a country kitchen, cottage interior or smaller dining space.

Although the origin of the name remains uncertain, cricket tables are generally believed to take their name from their distinctive three-legged form rather than the game itself. Today they remain among the most desirable forms of English country furniture, appreciated for their timeless proportions, versatility and understated craftsmanship.

Equally suited as a lamp table, occasional table, hallway table or centre table, this is a genuine nineteenth-century example whose appeal lies not only in its appearance but also in the thoughtful construction that has enabled it to survive in excellent working order for well over a century.

FAQ

What is a cricket table?

A cricket table is a traditional three-legged country table, typically associated with English vernacular furniture. Its three-legged design provides excellent stability, particularly on uneven floors.

Why does a cricket table have three legs?

The triangular arrangement creates a naturally rigid and stable structure while allowing the table to stand firmly without rocking.

Is this table made using traditional joinery?

Yes. The frame is assembled using pegged mortise-and-tenon joints with paired hardwood pegs, while the under-tier shelf is individually housed around each leg using original V-shaped joints.

Why This Object Stands Apart

What distinguishes this cricket table is not simply its attractive mellow colour or classic form, but the quality of its traditional construction. The pegged mortise-and-tenon framework, carefully fettled V-shaped housings within the triangular shelf and the repeated use of triangular geometry demonstrate the thoughtful engineering that characterises the very best examples of nineteenth-century vernacular furniture. It is a table whose craftsmanship becomes more apparent the closer it is examined.
