This six-plank oak coffer, dating from the Charles I and Charles II era (circa 1640–1660), also known as a six-board chest, is a remarkable example of Restoration and Carolean period design. Crafted from solid oak, it embodies themes of love, status, and personal identity central to 17th-century craftsmanship.
This Charles I or II oak coffer may have been made for a marriage, stored prized linens or family documents, or stood in the hall of a modest manor. Who knows for sure, but it weaves a story of wealth, status and the love of fine crafted furniture.
These silent details like the lunettes, hearts, initials, and fleur-de-lys—form a decorative language, each motif a chapter in a story now centuries old. As with so many antiques, this chest invites us to look beyond its surface—to imagine the people, the lives, and the occasions it once quietly served.
The Initials 'E.H.
The inscribed initials offer a tantalizing personal detail—perhaps the original owner or the individual for whom the chest was made. Names such as Edward Howard, Edmund Hall, or even Elizabeth Hyde would have been common and appropriate to the era. If the chest was commissioned by or for someone with social standing, it might have been intended for a marriage, inheritance, or commemoration.
While we may never know the exact identity behind 'E.H.', the use of initials strongly suggests a personalised commission, marking the chest as a valued family possession.
The key details: fleur-de-lys carved to each 'V' cut side, extensive detailed carving to the front with lunettes, hearts and the initials E.H. And not to forget the the inside and back which shows you every little cut and nuance of the oak.
