The Carved Ebony Male Bust by Roland Ogiamien (c. 1980) is a stunning work of African art, meticulously crafted from rare ebony, ranging from jet black to deep brown with subtle light streaks. The superb grain accentuates the fine detail of the face and headdress, symbolising traditional Yoruba fila or “chief’s cap” motifs. The elongated style signifies status, leadership, and masculinity.
This unique sculpture is signed and dated “R.U. Ogiamien 1980” on the underside — a testament to its authenticity and provenance. Roland Ogiamien, born in 1945, journeys as far as Ondo State in southwestern Nigeria for his prized ebony—a rarity that adds both value and distinction to the piece.
