Full Description
This Martin Scorey Primitive Folk Art Cockerel Sculpture is a striking example of late 20th-century British coastal primitive art. Standing proudly on a reclaimed driftwood base, the cockerel combines hand-painted timber with verdigris copper detailing, creating a compelling interplay of texture, colour and age.
Scorey, who lived and worked along the Hampshire coast, drew deeply from maritime life and rural tradition. Originally trained as a boat builder, he developed a natural affinity for driftwood, weathered timber and oxidised copper. These materials, shaped by sea air and time, became central to his sculptural language.
The cockerel’s verdigris copper tail feathers, crest and crop provide movement and a soft green patina that contrasts beautifully with the painted body. The driftwood base anchors the piece in authentic coastal primitive style, lending it narrative depth and tactile warmth.

Condition
As expected with a handcrafted primitive folk art sculpture, there are signs of age, natural wear, surface variation and patination. The copper displays authentic verdigris oxidation.
