Full Description

This exceptional Regency pier mirror dates to the early 1820s and remains remarkably intact, preserving its original foxed bevelled mirror plate — a feature increasingly rare and highly sought after. The glass displays a beautifully softened, smoky reflection, its natural foxing lending depth and atmosphere that modern replacements simply cannot replicate.

The frame is executed in finely carved giltwood and gesso, designed with confident neoclassical symmetry. Fluted columns rise on either side, crowned with Corinthian capitals, lending the mirror a strong architectural presence. Above, a breakfront cornice is enriched with a lattice frieze and delicate rosettes, adding refinement and decorative restraint in equal measure.

The gilt surface has mellowed gracefully over two centuries, revealing layers of patina, gentle wear, and subtle losses that speak to its authenticity. Even the reverse tells its own story — lined with aged paper that echoes its historic provenance and long, cherished life.

Perfectly proportioned for use above a console table, anchoring a fireplace mantel, or acting as a commanding vertical feature in a hallway or drawing room, this pier mirror captures the essence of Regency craftsmanship: elegant, balanced, and quietly dramatic.

Styling Suggestions

This Regency pier mirror works beautifully above a narrow console table, paired with classical sculpture, antique lamps, or gilt-framed artwork. It also makes a striking statement over a mantelpiece or in a hallway where its vertical proportions enhance ceiling height and architectural flow. Complements both traditional interiors and more eclectic, layered spaces seeking authentic historic character.
