Full Description
This handwoven Shiraz wool rug originates from the Fars region of southern Iran, an area long associated with vibrant tribal weaving traditions. Rugs from this region are celebrated for their bold compositions, expressive geometry, and symbolic language, passed down through generations of nomadic and semi-nomadic makers.
The deep red ground forms a powerful backdrop for a prominent central medallion, framed by a lively field of stylised tribal motifs. These include abstracted animal and floral forms, rendered with a naïve, intuitive quality that prioritises meaning and rhythm over strict symmetry. The result is a design that feels both grounded and animated, rich in visual interest.
Woven using the Persian (asymmetrical) knot on traditional looms, the rug has a robust structure and a dense wool pile that speaks to its handmade origins. The colour palette is dominated by warm madder red, softened by accents of ivory, muted blues, browns, and earthy tones, creating depth and subtle movement across the surface.
Rather than following a rigid pattern, the design reflects the weaver’s cultural memory and personal expression. Motifs traditionally reference themes of protection, prosperity, harmony with nature, and everyday life, making each rug a unique visual narrative rather than a purely decorative object.
Professionally cleaned and ready to place, this rug works beautifully as both a functional floor covering and a characterful statement piece.
