DESCRIPTION
This elegant antique French painted commode dates to the late 18th to early 19th century, circa 1790–1820, and is a fine example of refined provincial furniture produced in France during the Neoclassical period.
Decorated throughout with delicate hand-painted floral garlands, the commode retains its original soft cream to pale ochre painted ground. The painted surface has mellowed naturally over time and displays a genuine early crackle glaze, with areas of gentle wear that enhance its authenticity and visual depth.
The design is architectural and restrained, with straight, upright sides reflecting post-1770 Neoclassical taste, particularly outside Paris. The sides are formed as flat painted panel fields, outlined by hand-painted linear borders with softly shaped corner returns. This drawn decoration provides an elegant architectural effect without carved ornament, typical of provincial furniture where paint was used in place of costly carving.
The drawer configuration is both practical and characteristic of the period. Above three deep graduated drawers sit two shallow drawers flanking a deeper square central drawer. The variation in drawer depth reflects the flexible, multi-purpose nature of domestic furniture at the turn of the 19th century, designed to accommodate a range of personal and household items.
Structurally, the commode is constructed from long-grown pine, including the natural pine inner drawer boxes. The drawers are assembled using very fine, hand-cut dovetail joints, entirely consistent with late 18th and early 19th century French cabinet-making. The wide-board construction and visible ageing further support the early date.
The painted decoration continues across the top and down to the plinth base, confirming that the commode was conceived and finished as a cohesive whole rather than altered later.
Painted commodes such as this example reflect the practical elegance of French provincial furniture at the turn of the 19th century.
