























Exquisitely detailed 18th-century carved oak coffer chest, proudly dated 1791 - a timeless creation of heritage and craftsmanship. Unique and you will probably never find another, as this was made specifically for this Aken family in 1791. Remarkable when you think about it. So you could own this piece if you are quick.
The frame extends to the ground and the styles and form the legs to the front and back raising the coffer chest off the ground. A carved border framing the front is adorned with two elaborate phoenix's with a vine weaving through the design. The top section of the oak frame contains the date 1791 in what looks like a crown of flowers. Four raised and fielded panels with floral panels and even more detail. The central carved panel contains all the detail and the family name AKEN, researching the name takes the family back to the 1700s.
The whole front has a chip carved ground, with two raised and fielded panels and a flat frame border. The top has been made of one solid plank of oak timber which is unusual as often they were made with two planks and finished with bread boards ends.
Inside you have two candle boxes or sometimes referred to as tills, each one is missing the lid. The hinges have been replaced at some point. The solid frame construction is a traditional joined design utilising pegs. It has the original keyhole lock and latch but the key is no longer available and there are some loses to the whole lock mechanism.
Remarkable condition overall and a stunning design making the chest a pure delight to own. and possibly originated from Germany near the border with the Netherlands.
The family who commissioned this coffer spared not costs and the density of the oak is incredible. Heavy is an understatement on this piece.
