Chinese Camphor Wood Coffer/Chest

 Camphor Wood comes from an evergreen hardwood tree Cinnamomum Camphora.  The chest is highly carved with an ebonised finish, a decorative brass plaque with flap is on the front to hold the lid closed.

The lid is stepped in the middle and hinged with bowfront pilasters depicting a carved dragon on each.  The hinge is made of brass and holds the lid firmly in place when open.  The inside is in the natural camphor wood finish, is very clean and has been clearly looked after.  There is a shallow sliding tray which is removeable.

The lid is intricately carved with a scene of people, houses, and trees with a border of flowers framing the scene.  The front of the chest is carved with a bridge, trees, and people, also ships on the sea.  Maybe the scene is telling a story.  This too has a border of flowers framing the scene.  In very good condition, a few marks and natural wear commensurate with its age.

Perfect for storing bedding, throws, or children’s toys, all those things to be hidden away out of sight.
