Japanese Carved Wood Tea Shop Sign Circa 1890-1900

£440.00

This is an honest and original one off piece of decorative signage have ever seen.

I know in these times of Covid restrictions it may be the last thing you are thinking of opening. But and it's a BIG BUT, if you might be planning to open a traditional old Japanese Tea Shop, we have the sign for you.

Alternatively, if you love the colours, detail and truly unique look of this sign for pure decorative reasons, you wont be disappointed at all.

This sign has the most incredible red wood with patches of light colours, age and finish I have seen for sometime, and I do love a bit of old timber for the character and warmth if gives you. The main carving has a wonderful faded turquoise on top of a darker ebonised finish and the smaller script has a base of red with a delicate overlay of turquoise. The detail is stunning.

To the right hand side it has the beautiful weathered and worn look, as if the sea has channeled through the woods surface. You may find this strange, but hey who cares, if you smell the wood it has a very faint vanilla scent. I was expecting a dust wood smell and got vanilla. What can I say!

Dating back to Circa 1890-1900 the unique wear and shape is so organic and natural.

You will notice in the centre a wonder carving in Japanese kana script, they have two scripts known as Hiragana or Katakana. Someone kindly translated the main script carving and the smaller blue and red script on the front and created a document on the back.

The main carving refers to 'Stillness or Inner Peace' and the small script from top to bottom roughly translates to; Maple Tea Room, Decorated, Tea Room and the last possibly a place name, whoever translated wasn't quite sure.
